Why Art Therapy?

Why Art Therapy might work for you?

Let me ask you something...

Have you ever felt something so big you didn’t have the words for it?

A knot in your chest, heaviness?

A memory that sits in the body but refuses to explain itself...

Now imagine this instead:

You’re sitting at a table. There is paper. Charcoal. Paint. Clay. You don’t have to be “good” at art. No one is judging technique. You just begin.

A line…Another line...A shape.

A colour that feels right — not because it looks nice, but because it matches something inside.

That is where art psychotherapy begins. The artwork becomes a bridge — between what is felt and what can be understood.

   Sometimes words come first.

   Sometimes the image comes first.

   Sometimes the silence speaks
In trauma work especially, this matters. Trauma is often stored in sensory memory — images, body sensations, fragments.

- Art offers a way to approach these experiences safely, gradually, and with control.

You are never forced to revisit something.

You are not analysed.

You are accompanied.

The image sits between us.

We look at it together.

We think about it together.

You remain in control of your story.

UK History of Art Therapy

It began during the Second World War when artist Adrian Hill discovered that drawing while recovering from tuberculosis helped him process distress and regain hope. He coined the term “art therapy” in 1942.

Later, pioneers like Edward Adamson worked in psychiatric hospitals, encouraging patients to create freely without interpretation or judgement — radical at the time. Their work shifted how mental health care was understood.

The profession formally developed in Britain through the 1960s and 70s, and today art psychotherapists in the UK are HCPC-registered allied health professionals working in the NHS, schools, charities, forensic services, hospices, and private practice.

It is not art teaching.

It is not art class.

It is not about talent.

It is psychological therapy — with art as the language.

Why Faulty Lines?

A line on paper can tremble, break, thicken, shift direction. So can a life. It is okay to get things wrong. You are just trying and failing until something shifts.

Art psychotherapy honours faults - this is a valuable part of the process.

If You’re Wondering…

“I’m not creative.” → You don’t need to be.

“What if I draw something dark?” → That’s allowed.

“Will I have to explain everything?” → Only what feels right.

“Is it safe?” → Yes. The space is confidential, structured, and ethically held.

This is my invitation to you...

If you are carrying trauma, anxiety, grief, identity questions, or simply a sense that something inside you needs space —come and try art psychotherapy with me. It offers a contained, hopeful, and collaborative journey.

You are not alone.

It is Not a quick fix.

It is Not a performance.

It is a process.

One image at a time.
